Chris Butcher is a Materials Characterization Specialist with the Electron Optics Group of the Institute. Chris has a diploma in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Technology and has completed several courses in Organic and Analytical Chemistry from Mohawk College. At Sheridan College, Chris completed courses in Professional Photography. Before joining the BIMR in 1985, Chris worked in the local steel and chemical industries.

His primary responsibilities within the Institute include acting as a resource person for the materialography and the preparation of materials for further analysis or scientific use. He also runs the general facilities of the Institute (see Facilities). Chris helps graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, faculty members, undergraduates and people from industry with their research projects. Chris also has extensive experience in the performance of failure analysis, materials characterization and technical training for industry.
